Day-of Tips

Tips for a smooth exam.

Small adjustments the day-before and morning-of can make a real difference - especially for blood pressure readings.

01

Stay Hydrated

Drink water before your exam. The DOT physical includes a urinalysis to check for underlying health concerns.

02

Skip the Caffeine

Avoid coffee, energy drinks, and excessive caffeine for 2 to 3 hours beforehand. Caffeine can elevate blood pressure and heart rate temporarily.

03

Sleep Well

Arrive well-rested. A good night’s sleep helps maintain accurate readings - especially for blood pressure checks.

04

Take Meds Normally

Continue your prescribed medications exactly as you would on a regular driving day. Bring your most recent medical reports if applicable.

03  ·  Additional Documentation

What may require additional documentation.

Most pre-existing conditions are still qualifying - they just need the right documentation. Bringing it the first time avoids a return visit.

CPAP / Sleep Apnea

A 30-day compliance report showing 4+ hours of nightly use over at least 70% of nights. Required for any driver with diagnosed sleep apnea.

Insulin / Diabetes

Most recent A1C (within 3 months) and self-monitoring blood glucose logs. Insulin-dependent diabetes requires additional FMCSA documentation.

Cardiac History

Cardiologist clearance letter confirming you’re cleared for commercial driving. Bring your most recent EKG or stress test results if available.

Blood Pressure Medications

Current medication list with doses, plus a recent home BP log if you self-monitor. Most drivers still qualify with documented control.

Seizure History

Neurologist clearance letter, full seizure history documentation, and current medication list. Federal regulations require detailed review.

Mental Health Medications

A current letter from your prescribing provider confirming stability and clearance for commercial driving.

06  ·  Common Questions

What drivers ask us most.

How long does the DOT physical take?

About 30 minutes from start to finish when you come prepared. The exam itself is approximately 20 minutes; the rest is paperwork, electronic submission, and printing your certificate and wallet card. Drivers with complex medical histories or missing documentation can run longer.

Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?

We’re appointment-only. This is intentional - it’s how we keep your visit to 30 minutes instead of having you sit in a waiting room behind walk-ins. Most drivers can book within 1 to 3 business days. Call (813) 419-7911 if you need something faster - we’ll work to fit you in.

Will I get my Medical Examiner’s Certificate the same day?

Yes. If you qualify, your MEC is electronically submitted to the FMCSA the same day, and you leave the appointment with both a printed paper copy and a laminated wallet-size card. No waiting on mail. No follow-up visit just to pick up paperwork.

What if I don’t pass?

Most issues that hold up a certification are correctable - elevated blood pressure on the day of exam, missing CPAP compliance documentation, an outdated A1C, or a specialist letter that needs updating. We’ll explain exactly what’s needed and walk you through the path to recertification. In most cases, you can return within a few days or weeks once the issue is addressed.

How long is my certification good for?

Up to 24 months for most drivers. Drivers with certain conditions - high blood pressure under monitoring, diabetes, sleep apnea, certain heart conditions - may receive a shorter certification (3, 6, or 12 months) until the condition is documented as stable. We’ll tell you exactly what your timeline looks like at the visit.

What conditions can disqualify me?

Uncontrolled diabetes, untreated severe sleep apnea, certain heart conditions, uncontrolled epilepsy, severe vision or hearing loss, and active substance use disorders can disqualify a driver. Most of these become qualifying again with proper treatment and documentation. If you have a specific condition you’re worried about, call ahead - we’ll tell you what documentation to bring before you book.

Should I take my medications before the exam?

Yes - take your medications normally, exactly as you would on a regular driving day. Do not skip prescribed medications to try to influence the exam results. Bring a complete list of everything you take (prescription, over-the-counter, supplements) including dose and prescriber.

Do I need to fast?

No fasting required. Eat normally before your appointment. Avoid caffeine and energy drinks for 2 to 3 hours beforehand if possible - they can elevate your blood pressure and heart rate temporarily. Drink water; the exam includes a urinalysis.

Do you accept fleet billing?

Yes. Trucking companies and fleet operators can arrange direct billing and recurring scheduling for their drivers. Call (813) 419-7911 or email info@liveinvitality.net to set up a fleet account.

Are you on the FMCSA National Registry?

Yes. Live In Vitality’s medical examiners are NRCME-certified (National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners) and authorized by the FMCSA to perform DOT physicals. This is the federal requirement for any provider conducting commercial driver medical examinations.
