The science behind the light

Relaxing Celluma red light therapy session for skin and pain

It is not magic. It is photobiomodulation, and it works at the level of your cells.

Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light pass through the skin and reach the mitochondria, the energy centers inside your cells. There, they support the production of ATP, the fuel your body uses to repair tissue, calm inflammation, build collagen, and recover from stress.

Research on red light therapy spans dermatology, sports medicine, pain management, and aesthetics. The Celluma CONTOUR is FDA-cleared for four specific uses, and each one is supported by clinical data.

Used consistently and at the right cadence, it becomes a powerful part of a larger plan for inflammation, recovery, and healthy aging.

Three kinds of light, three depths

The Celluma CONTOUR combines blue, red, and near-infrared light in one flexible panel that shapes to your body, so each wavelength reaches the layer it works best on.

A note from Dr. Tracy

Why red light therapy earns its place

I am careful about adding new services. Wellness has a way of chasing whatever is trending, and I never want LIV to be that kind of practice. So I ask the same questions of every therapy we consider. Is there real clinical evidence? Does it support the way the body actually works? And does it deserve a place alongside lab work, hormone care, gut healing, and everything else we do here?

Red light therapy passes that test. It is grounded in photobiomodulation, where specific wavelengths of light support the mitochondria in your cells. That fits naturally with how we already think about energy, inflammation, recovery, and longevity. The Celluma CONTOUR is FDA-cleared for four real uses, each backed by clinical data, and that is the standard I hold every service to.

On its own, it is a useful tool. As part of a thoughtful plan, it is a meaningful one.

For our patients, red light does its best work as part of something larger. It supports body contouring alongside our weight loss program, skin goals alongside our aesthetic care, and recovery and pain relief when it is used consistently.

Questions we hear often

How does red light therapy work?

Specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light pass through the skin and reach the mitochondria inside your cells. There, they support the production of ATP, the energy your body uses for tissue repair, calming inflammation, building collagen, and recovery. The scientific name for this process is photobiomodulation.

What is the Celluma CONTOUR FDA-cleared to treat?

Four uses: body contouring, which reduces the circumference of the waist, hips, and thighs; aging skin, including wrinkles and texture; pain, including muscle, joint, and arthritic pain; and acne. Each use has its own treatment mode on the device.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your goal. Body contouring usually takes three to four sessions a week for four to six weeks, which is why the 20-session series is built the way it is. Skin and pain goals often show early benefit within five to ten sessions, and acne improves over one to two months of steady sessions. We map out the right cadence for you at your first visit.

How long is each session?

Each session is 30 minutes of treatment time on the Celluma timer. Plan on about 35 to 40 minutes in our office, which includes check-in and getting comfortable before the light comes on.

Does it hurt, and are there side effects?

No, it does not hurt. Most people describe sessions as warm, quiet, and relaxing. Some notice mild, temporary warmth or redness of the skin that fades quickly. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal day right away.

Is this the same as a tanning bed?

Not at all. Red light therapy uses red, near-infrared, and blue wavelengths with no UV light. Tanning beds rely on UV light, which is what damages the skin. They are completely different technologies.

How much does red light therapy cost, and do packages expire?

A single 30-minute session is $50. Packages lower the cost per session: 5 sessions for $225, 10 sessions for $400, and 20 sessions for $700. The 5-session series is valid for 2 months, and the 10 and 20-session series are valid for 4 months, starting from your first session.

Can I combine red light with my other care at LIV?

Yes, and we encourage it. Red light pairs especially well with our weight loss program for contouring, our skin and aesthetic care, and our functional medicine work on inflammation and recovery. Dr. Tracy can help you fit it into your overall plan.
